GSIF History

Building on the Saluki Student Investment Fund (SSIF), which was established for undergraduates at SIU Carbondale in June 2000, graduate students from the College of Business MBA and MAcc programs worked throughout the 2012-2013 academic year to propose the Graduate Student Investment Fund (GSIF). These Founding Members met throughout the year to author the fund’s investment philosophy, engineer its investment process, and set forth its investment policies.

In May 2013, the Founding Members presented their proposal to the SIU Foundation’s Investment Committee. The committee unanimously supported the proposal and recommended to the SIU Foundation that the GSIF be assigned to manage a U.S. Equity Large Cap Core strategy, benchmarked against the S&P 500 Index. The GSIF strategy was funded with $500,000 in August 2013.

Like the SSIF, the GSIF is modeled after a real investment management firm. GSIF students are focused on making the best investment decisions possible on behalf of their primary client, the SIU Foundation.
